Who wouldn't, when sitting back on your comfortable couch and watching Vin Diesel and Tyrese launch sports cars out of skyscrapers? Only, because Mirren has such pull in the industry, she made a role in the next Fast movie happen.
As with Cipher, we don't know the true nature of Mirren's character. But it's believed that she will be playing a villain, which is tantalizing and perfect, and she also revealed that she'll ride in an ambulance with a key character. The other day, Mirren was talking about being nervous on the set, commenting that because this cast has been at it for so long together, she'll feel like the new kid on the school yard, and won't be able to get over the butterflies. It's adorable that someone as badass and beautiful as Helen Mirren might be intimidated by Ludacris and Tyrese. Family is the most important word in these movies, the one that's dropped with moist emotion and hushed Sunday-sermon reverence. It's the idea that has held the franchise together — movie to movie, race to race, prayer to prayer — in an episodic soap about kith, kin and custom cars.

Adidas' 'Impossible is nothing' tagline fits perfectly into the scheme of things. Perhaps they consider product-placing themselves with this franchise. There are some new elements that the producers hope will enliven a franchise now well into its second decade. Charlize Theron has a memorable turn as a hacker villain and Helen Mirren becomes perhaps the first RADA-trained actress to appear in the series.
After largely sitting out "Furious 7," Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has a more substantial role in this sequel (although his off-screen feud with Diesel led to some unwelcome press). Gary Gray, who fresh from the box office success of "Straight Outta Compton" slides into the director's chair, looking to inject a darker tone into a series that's best known for its gravity-defying car chases. That the series is still going strong over 16 years and eight installments is a testament to the filmmakers' ability to keep finding fresh ways to reinvigorate a franchise that was basically jerry-rigged to exploit muscle car lust.
